Snowed In

Another photo of guys hanging out in the snow.  This time, I'm guess about ten to fifteen years latter than those in the last post.   Take a look at the guy in the middle.  He bears a slight resemblance to one of the guys seen yesterday.  Not close enough for a sure fire connection, but I did get all photos from this and the last post from the same source.

Idaho Snow

College guys from the same frat?  That's my guess and I'm stickin' with it.  Just a bunch of guys getting ready to go out and face the real world as free and easy adults.  Hanging out with the guys at the cabin.  A little poker, whiskey, and a cigar or two.  I get a late thirties early forties feeling from these pictures, so the world they were about to face would be neither free nor easy.

Lost In the Snow

I know, they're not actually lost in the snow.  But the composition is so interesting.  Did the photographer mean to frame like this, or was it a mistake?  Was he trying to show just how much it had snowed?  I like the lady on the left in her full length fur coat.

Posing In the Snow

I don't know whether these two photos are related or not, but I did find them in the same place, they look very similar, so I'm posting them together.  Because of the hat, I can't be sure, but I think it might be the same woman.  Call it small town America, in the twenties, in winter.

Winter Sports

Winter is coming and it's time to think about winter sports.  Why is it that only one person acknowledges the camera?  Are the others just unaware or are they too hip to smile and say cheese?  I'm guessing hip detachment, and  the lady  mugging for the camera is the only fun one of the lot.

Thinking Of Snow

It was 105 today (In Los Angeles.) and I'm tired of the heat.  I'd love to play in the snow.  Dated 1932.

Standing In Snow

Yes, I know.  It's summer.  That doesn't mean I can't post a photo of a guy standing in snow.  Now, give this man a pair of those round, horn rimmed glasses, and a pipe and tell me he wouldn't look like Jean-Paul Sartre. Hey, I read.

Bare Legs in the Snow

Written on the back of the top image, "Lassen Park Pat & Margret," the second, "Elaine B. Lassen."

It might have been quite warm the day these pictures were taken.  Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the snowiest places in California and it's not uncommon, even in these days of climate change, for there to be a blanket of snow well into the summer.  So, let's not make fun of Margret for choosing fashion over warmth.  I've hiked Lassen, in summer, in snow, in shorts and a tee shirt, and been very comfortable.  Climbing the peak, mid-day, in the sun, even in snow can be sweaty work.  Again, I know this from experience.

Mount Lassen is the southernmost active volcano in the continental United States.  It's part of the Cascade Range.  After thousands of years of dormancy, a series of eruptions began in 1914 and lasted until 1921.  On August 9, 1916, congress created Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park to preserve the landscape and it's devastation.  Compare that to Mount St. Helens after it's eruption,  where the creation of a new national park was blocked by timber interests that wanted to remove the downed trees, and those opposed to the parks movement on general principle. Yes, it is possible to go backwards.  Those interested in the U.S. National Parks system can go to www.nps.gov

Spring

The ice is breaking up on the lake and, while it's still a bit chilly, those winter coats aren't needed anymore. But where was this picture taken? I wish I knew.

It's Snowing in Texas

Running In the Snow

I think it's the same little girl. In any case I found them together. Judging by the cars it looks like these are from the mid to late thirties. It makes one wonder how this girl and her family did during the depression. A lot of people ended up loosing everything in that decade, but many others survived with their lives barely changed. And after those years, a world war. Perhaps her father or an older brother fought, and perhaps died.

The German American Collection, Winter Transportation

Written on the back of the car photograph, "A Bent Fender Feb. 7, 1939." I guess that's why they need the horses.

The Epworth League Album 11, The Dead of Winter

Only one picture on today's page. Imagine having to get around in the dead of winter in an open sleigh. No heater, exposed to the elements, it would be possible to die of hypothermia just going to town. A broken runner or a lame horse, and no public transit and one could be snowed in for weeks or even months.
